Do Amazing Training with Nelson Tasman Air

We are based in Motueka, at the top of the South Island of New Zealand – one of the most fantastic places in the world to learn to fly, and have fun doing it! Here we have highly qualified training Pilots with years of experience in recreational and commercial flying.

Why it really is an amazing place to train:

  • Our base at Motueka is one of the best locations in the world to develop all-round flying skills, from landing on the beach in our large low-flying area to landing on snow in the Southern Alps 10 minutes later. Busy Nelson Airport is just 10 minutes flying time away, giving you important exposure to Air Traffic control operations.
  • Motueka sports some of the country’s highest sunshine hours, so there is little training downtime due to weather.
  • We offer flexible start dates and training schedules if you want to learn part time flying in the evenings and at weekends. Alternatively, we can also provide a full time training programme
  • Motueka is a small town that is relatively cheap to live in compared to major cities. Most students walk or bike to Motueka Aerodrome, reducing travel costs.
  • We are on the edge of the Abel Tasman National Park and in one of the most beautiful and renowned holiday locations in New Zealand, so you can relax and have fun when you’re not flying.

Pilot Training and Testing

We have over 20 years experience in helicopter flight training. We have very experienced A, B and C Category instructors ready to tailor a programme to suit your needs.

• PPL (private pilot’s licence)
• CPL (commercial pilot’s licence)
• Instructor Ratings
• Sling Ratings
• Advanced Mountain training.

Flight Testing

We offer CPL and PPL flight testing with our A Category flight examiner Ross Troughton.

Timescales for PPL and CPL licences

Start dates are flexible and we can provide part time or full time training tailored to your needs.

PPL licence

Minimum of 50 hours flying which can be completed in as little as six weeks
Six theory subjects are required. These can be self-studied with the support of our instructors or you can enrol on a full time PPL theory course in conjunction with Nelson Aviation College for eight weeks.

CPL licence

Minimum of 150 hours total flying time (includes 50 PPL hours)
It includes the same six subjects studied for PPL but to a more advanced level. These can be self-studied with the support of our instructors or you can enrol on a full time CPL theory course in conjunction with Nelson Aviation College for thirteen Weeks.

PPL requirements

• Minimum age 17 years to sit flight test
• Class 2 CAA medical certificate
• No formal education is required
CPL requirements
• Minimum age 18 years to sit flight test
• Class 1 CAA medical certificate
• No formal education is required

All our trial and training flights are operated by Nelson Tasman Helicopter Training Ltd.
